AdRide will be hosting a 24-hour ride on Lookout Mountain from 6:30pm on Thursday, October 22 through 6:30pm on Friday, October 23. The ride is open to any who want to join and folks can ride anywhere from one lap to as many laps as they can ride in 24 hours. The ride will kick off with the official weekly AdRide from the lower lot on Lookout Mountain right at 6:30pm.
24 Hours of Lookout is not a timed event. It is not a race. It is an individual effort, a combination of personal goals pursued together. It is an opportunity to spend time with good folks on bikes on an iconic local climb. It is also a chance to come together as a cycling community and honor one of our own.
When we first conceived the ride on an early morning climb up Lookout Mountain, it was originally intended as a chance to spend 24 hours riding one of our favorite hills. We saw it as an excuse to set everything else aside for a whole day and simply ride. It was a challenge to see how many laps we could each muster.
Then on August 21st, a local cyclist named Tom Flanagan was hit and killed by a drunk driver while riding up Lookout Mountain. While we didn’t personally know Tom, he was our brother. And his death deeply moved each one of us. We quickly decided that we needed to do something to honor him and help his family if we could. So we agreed we would each use our 24-hour ride as an opportunity to raise money for Tom’s family.
We began reaching out to our cycling friends, talking about our intention and it became clear that we were not alone. When others heard what we were up to, they wanted to help and join in. Our friends at Rapha, who are huge supporters of local cycling communities, committed to match up to $500 of contributions to the family. The gentlemen at Rodeo Labs said they could provide some Trail Nuggets. We could feel the energy of the cycling community coming together to honor Tom. And we wanted to extend an invitation to all Colorado cyclsits to join in.
Since 24-Hours of Lookout is an individual effort, all someone has to do to join is to show up during the ride. Riders should feel free to come and go as they wish. While people and organizations may show up to encourage and support riders throughout the 24 hours, since this is an individual effort there is no official support or aid stations. Riders must be prepared to be completely self-sufficient. We also expect all riders to follow all traffic laws, be courteous to motorists, respect the residents of Lookout Mountain, and ride with both front and rear lights if they are choosing to ride during the night.
While this is an open ride, we do encourage each person, if they are so moved, to make a contribution to Tom’s family through their GoFundMe page, or use their effort to get friends and family to make contributions as well. https://www.gofundme.com/tomflanagan. If you do make a contribution, please mention either AdRide of 24 Hours in the note section.
Huge Thanks to our friends at Rapha, Trail Nuggets and Rodeo Labs for helping make this crazy idea happen.
